Two kinds of confession

The day before, the group was in 1 John 1:9: confess to God, and He forgives. James 5:16 adds a second kind: "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." Forgiveness comes from Christ. Being made whole often comes through other people. DeWayne's point is that we tend to do the first and skip the second.

Why saying it out loud matters

Sin grows in the dark. As long as it stays unspoken, it keeps its grip on your sleep, your mood, and your marriage. Once you say it to someone you trust, it's in the light, and it can't last there. The healing James talks about is emotional as much as physical.

Pick your people

This isn't a call to tell everyone everything. The church isn't made of perfect people, so use godly wisdom. Look for a spouse, an accountability partner, or a close friend in the faith. Righteous doesn't mean perfect. It means standing right with God, and that person's prayer is powerful and effective.

A side effect

When you're honest, the other person often finds out they're not the only one struggling. Your confession can encourage them, too.

This week

  • Name the one or two people you could be this honest with.
  • If no one comes to mind, ask God to show you who it should be.
