A brand-new church

It's easy to expect a church to handle every situation perfectly. But the church in Acts was brand new and making it up as it went. In Acts 15, Paul wants to revisit the churches, Barnabas wants to bring John Mark, and Paul refuses because Mark had abandoned them before. The disagreement is so sharp they split up.

What Luke leaves out

Luke doesn't say who was right. Maybe Barnabas saw something in Mark that Paul couldn't see yet. Maybe Mark simply wasn't meant to be with Paul in that season. Either way, Mark later becomes a valued help to Paul.

The fruit of a second chance

One participant pointed out that when someone gets a second chance nobody else would give them, fruit can show up that no one expected. That's what Barnabas did for Mark.

Try this

  • Think of a church decision that still bothers you and pray about it rather than arguing.
  • Look for someone at work or church who could use a second chance.
